Frequently asked questions

What is counselling and how does it work?

Counselling is a dedicated time and space to explore what you're going through with someone trained to listen without judgement. We work together at your pace — talking through your thoughts and feelings, making sense of patterns, and finding ways forward that feel right for you.

How do I know if I need a counsellor?

There's no single rule. People often come when something feels stuck, overwhelming, or hard to talk about with those closest to them. If you're wondering whether counselling might help, that's usually worth a conversation — a free 15-minute call can help you decide with no pressure.

What happens in a first session?

The first session is about getting to know each other. I'll ask what brings you here, what you hope for, and how you'd like to work together. There's no pressure to share everything at once — you set the pace. It's also a chance to see whether my approach feels like a good fit.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some people find a handful of sessions enough to work through a specific issue; others benefit from longer-term support. We'll review how things are going as we go, and you're never committed to a fixed number.

Is online counselling as effective as in-person?

Research shows online therapy can be just as effective for many concerns. I offer confidential sessions via Microsoft Teams across the UK, with the same care and professionalism as in-person work. What matters most is finding a format that helps you feel safe and able to open up.

How is counselling different from talking to a friend?

A counsellor is trained to listen without taking sides, offering advice, or sharing their own agenda. Sessions are confidential, consistent, and focused entirely on you. That dedicated space can make it easier to explore things you might hold back elsewhere.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes, with rare exceptions. What you share stays between us, except where there's a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if a court orders disclosure. I'll explain confidentiality clearly at the start so you know exactly where you stand.

How much do sessions cost and how do I book?

Individual sessions are £70, with concessions available in some circumstances. You can book by calling 07544 518276, emailing gareth@gareth-vaughan.co.uk, or using the contact form. I offer a free 15-minute consultation so we can talk before you commit.
